The Vancouver Convention Centre (VCC) is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, and it definitely has a lot to celebrate. Since adding its west building, which tripled the facility's capacity, the VCC has welcomed more than 9 million guests from around the world and generated more than $2.4 billion in direct spending for British Columbia. Having hosted 5,561 events, the VCC has seen TED conferences, SIGGRAPH computer graphics conferences, trade shows, private meetings, banquets, fundraisers, public celebrations, film and television shoots, and more.
"The reputation of Vancouver and the Vancouver Convention Centre is so much stronger now than 10 years ago. Hosting the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games was a huge catalyst. We’re now seen as a global city," says Claire Smith, VCC vice president of sales and marketing.
Since opening 10 years ago, VCC has become the only double LEED Platinum Convention Centre in the world. "We were built to the highest environmental standards, but we have mirrored that philosophy in every aspect of managing and operating our facility," Smith says.
In addition to its diversity in events and commitment to the environment, Smith says the staff of VCC are now more confident in the facility's capabilities, allowing them to be more flexible and imaginative to help clients push boundaries on how the space can be used.
"Our main goal is to look forward. While we have had an incredibly exciting and successful 10 years, we want to build on that success and continue to grow and propel the industry forward," Smith says. "We set out to be a global leader in the convention industry, and while we have achieved great things, it is not a static vision; we have to continue to evolve to be successful."
Smith says they are looking to their team, clients, partners and the surrounding community to help shape their strategies moving forward. "We want to evolve our space and continue to enhance the delegate experience. We want to lead innovation in the industry," she says.
