One of the first decisions meeting and event planners face is where to hold their gathering. Considering the dizzying array of choices, it’s not always a simple task. In Illinois, venues run the gamut from sleek urban skyscrapers and sprawling conference centers to trendy restaurants, amenity-rich resorts, and more. The one you choose is a reflection on you, as well as on your organization. Even more, it can play a pivotal role in whether prospective attendees register for your event or not.
“A venue sets the stage for everything that follows,” says Michael Solis, director of sales and events for Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel in Northbrook. “It’s the first impression, the mood-setter, the memory-maker. The right space doesn’t just hold an event—it also elevates it, shaping how attendees connect, engage, and celebrate.”
Of course, meeting and event budgets are essential considerations when choosing a venue, but meeting planners also want the “wow factor.” It’s that special quality that makes the difference between a good event and one so exceptional attendees can’t wait to return. Read on to discover a diverse selection of Illinois venues that are sure to deliver that jaw-dropping reaction from eventgoers.
Hot Hotels
When stepping into the Waldorf Astoria Chicago, attendees are sure to notice the opulent crystal chandelier in the lobby. It was modeled after one of Coco Chanel’s vintage brooches, just one indication of the luxury and elegance that permeates throughout the French-inspired hotel. (Another is the private courtyard entrance, a rarity in the city.)
Located in the fashionable Gold Coast neighborhood, the 60-story Waldorf Astoria Chicago renovated its 214 guest rooms and suites recently, including the redesigned Presidential Suite and newly created Astoria Suite. Many of the remodeled rooms and suites also are appointed with fireplaces and private terraces.

The Waldorf Astoria Chicago has three dining and imbibing venues: the lobby-level Peacock Lounge and seasonal garden; newly opened Brass Tack, a brasserie-style restaurant; and reintroduced Bernard’s, a speakeasy-type cocktail lounge. Also on-site is a spa and health club with a menu of group wellness programs. Thirteen meeting spaces at the property can be configured for up to 200 attendees.
Out in the northern suburbs is the Renaissance Chicago North Shore Hotel, a longtime standout property that exudes an air of contemporary elegance awash in muted earthy hues, stylized lighting, and fine finishes. The recent multiphase renovation, which was completed in July, refreshed the hotel’s 385 guest rooms and suites, public spaces, meeting venues, and the canopied front entrance.

For meeting and event planners, the Northbrook hotel offers 18 distinct and flexible spaces to host functions of up to 500 people, from banquets to breakouts. Included venues are an amphitheater, two ballrooms, and The Greenery, the latter being the hotel’s signature midsize room with floor-to-ceiling windows.
Downtown, the Fairmont Chicago, Millennium Park, rises 45 stories above some of the city’s most well-known landmarks. The 686-room luxury hotel, which includes 83 Fairmont Gold Service rooms with enhanced rewards, is steps from Millennium and Grant parks, upscale shopping, acclaimed live theater, boat tours, and Lake Michigan beaches. Sixteen event spaces at the hotel accommodate up to 2,000 attendees.
History & Science Galore
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum in Springfield is a classically designed complex dedicated to the life and legacy of the 16th president of the U.S. Many event spaces there host gatherings, from executive board meetings to formal dinners. Most dramatic is the indoor Museum Plaza, flanked by re-creations of the White House and Lincoln’s boyhood cabin. The plaza seats 300 attendees and is available for rental in the evenings only.
Also part of the library and museum complex is the restored Union Station, a passenger train station that the Illinois Central Railroad opened in 1898, and the adjacent Union Station Park. All events at the historic campus can be customized with add-ons, such as museum admission and theatrical presentations.

With two noteworthy 2026 historical celebrations—the 250th birthday of America and Centennial of Route 66 (the original highway, which followed the present route of Interstate 55, ran through Springfield)—the city is an in-demand destination, says Amy Beadle, marketing manager for Visit Springfield. “Many people will be thinking about profound moments in our nation’s history,” she says.
The Adler Planetarium opened in 1930 on Chicago’s waterfront, the first planetarium built in the U.S. Today, it is a pillar of the city’s esteemed Museum Campus on Northerly Island. Here, extensive collections of artifacts, books, and instruments, alongside rotating exhibitions, tell the story of astronomy from the early medieval period through the modern-day Space Age. Among them are the Gemini 12 spacecraft from 1966 and one of the world’s oldest telescopes.
From its perch on a peninsula jutting into Lake Michigan, the planetarium boasts 360-degree skyline views, especially from the glass-domed event spaces. Several other spaces are available—indoors, outdoors, and situated among the exhibits—including two theaters and a board room. The Solarium is the largest, seating 370 dinner attendees. Catering and event management is handled by Chicago-based Food For Thought.
For upgrades, the Adler Planetarium offers a selection of mood-setting colored lighting and special effects, depending on the venue, like overhead celestial “wallpapers” that can be customized with marketing messages. A multimedia sky show is another option—with or without a live presenter. Events can be held at the planetarium only in the evenings.
Big & Beautiful
Tinley Park Convention Center in the suburb of Tinley Park is both mammoth in size and personable in function. The 120,000-square-foot facility breaks down into 21 separate spaces to accommodate a reception for thousands, a trade show with up to 375 booths, or a catered board meeting for 10. An outdoor patio overlooks a scenic wetland and pond.
The center’s sleek, contemporary design and glassy facade create an airy vibe and fill the interior spaces with natural light. The main exhibition hall is both windowed and carpeted. Connected to the convention center is the Even Hotel Chicago–Tinley Park Convention Center, An IHG Hotel, which features 202 smartly decorated guest rooms and suites equipped with fitness gear, in addition to two restaurants and a bar, business center, and fitness center.
Tinley Park Convention Center, located 30 miles south of downtown Chicago, stands at the intersection of major highways Interstate 80 and state Route 43, and it’s also in proximity to Chicago Midway International Airport. The city of Tinley Park boasts a charming town center robust with eateries, boutique shops, and historic landmarks.
“We have an easy existence without congestion or stress, but we have one of everything and free parking,” says Scott Rude, public relations manager at Visit Chicago Southland, which represents 63 cities and communities, including Tinley Park. “If I want to go into Chicago, I can be downtown in 30 minutes.”

Nestled within the idyllic surroundings of The Galena Territory in northwestern Illinois, Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa brims with country elegance and natural beauty. Accommodations include 80 charming rooms in the Main Lodge and 150 fully furnished villas and homes.
The resort sprawls over hills, forests, and waterways, features that invite kayaking, hiking, fishing, zip lining, horseback riding, hot-air ballooning, and more seasonal outdoor recreation. Also on-site are the Stonedrift Spa, four championship golf courses, and an
indoor heated swimming pool.
The resort has 14 flexible function spaces, many overlooking the gorgeous grounds. Included are the Eagle Ballroom with seating for up to 400 attendees, three conference homes, and two outdoor venues. With specialties in wellness programming and team building, the resort can tailor group activities, including sound baths, yoga and fitness classes, competitions, and problem-solving games. Eagle Ridge Resort & Spa Director of Sales and Marketing Colin Sanderson says, “We’re an all-in-one resort. You don’t have to leave after you get here.”
Elevated Events
Overlooking the picturesque Fox River is the Hemmens Cultural Center in Elgin, home of the world-class Elgin Symphony Orchestra. The center was built in 1969 and has since hosted top entertainers as well as arts and civic groups from the greater Fox Valley area.

Foremost of event spaces is the 1,200-seat Main Stage theater, which has clear sightlines. Planners might wish to curtain off the stage to transform it into a cabaret or cocktail space. A major expansion of the center completed earlier this year added a large-windowed lobby and canopied entrance, lending a modern feeling to a historic building. Also new is a reception space with a floor-to-ceiling glass wall framing views of the river and courtyard, plus a wraparound balcony. Another space is the subdividable exhibition hall, which features a kitchen and outdoor patio surrounded by murals and landscaping.
Another riverfront destination for gatherings is the Cliffbreakers Event Center along the Rock River in Rockford, a low-rise, Prairie-style venue loaded with European flair. Two levels of flexible event space with oversized windows revealing water and foliage are appointed with fine antiques, carved fireplace surrounds, and brilliant crystal chandeliers. The largest space is the second-floor Grand Ballroom, which features a massive, ornately carved, mirrored bar and seats 1,200 attendees. The Gold Room, named for the gilded console table with a matching mirror, works best for executive board meetings. The attached Riverview Inn & Suites, part of the Ascend Hotel Collection, is a boutique hotel with 84 guest rooms and bilevel suites, an indoor swimming pool, and a fitness center. The hotel’s vegan-friendly, 35-seat Oak & Embers Bistro is crowned with a massive stained-glass light fixture.
Nearby attractions include the historic Coronado Theatre, Anderson Japanese Gardens, Rockford Art Museum, and the Frank Lloyd Wright-designed Laurent House. Rockford is about 90 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.
