At the end of July, Traverse City’s The Inn at Black Star Farms and Chateau Chantal were named the top two “Best Wine Country Hotels in the U.S.” by readers of USA Today in the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards.
In a rare sweep for one region, both properties—located along the Traverse Wine Coast—secured the first and second spots, outshining well-known wine destinations across the country. The awards are determined by a combination of expert nominations and public voting over a 28-day period. “This recognition is a testament to the charm of Michigan’s wine country,” says Maggie Tyner, editor of the 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, in a prepared statement.
For meeting and event planners, both properties offer more than just picturesque vineyard views. They blend upscale accommodations with curated wine and culinary experiences—ideal for retreats, incentive travel, or small-scale events looking for a refined, yet approachable setting.

“Our passion lies in sharing the region’s natural beauty and exceptional wines with every delighted guest,” shares Sherri Campbell Fenton, managing owner of Black Star Farms.
Chateau Chantal CEO Marie-Chantal Dalese echoes the sentiment, stating, “To stand alongside another incredible northern Michigan winery inn is a testament to the world-class wine and hospitality our region offers.”
Both properties have placed in past 10Best awards, but this is the first time they have topped the list together. Traverse City Tourism President Trevor Tkach credited the region’s commitment to high-quality hospitality: “Hospitality is a fine art, and these two winery inns consistently give experiences that are remembered for a lifetime.”
