Making Minnesota Winters That Much Brighter

Two Minnesota hot spots are currently showing off dramatic light displays perfect for a group outing in the snow. The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska is currently hosting the Bruno Munro: Winter Light at the Arboretum exhibit from now until April 9, 2017. Taking place from 5-9 p.m. Thursday through Sunday, the ticketed event ranges in price from $12 to $22, depending on age.

This glow-in-the-dark show includes five outdoor installations, one indoor sculpture, five digital animations, 39 limited-edition prints and an artist exhibition in Reedy Gallery and MacMillan Auditorium. Some of the installations include Water Towers, which is 28 towers made from recycled plastic water bottles filled with lights and set to music; Rhadamanthine Club, 20 bales of straw wrapped in plastic that transform into blinking pairs of owl eyes; and The Good Seed, an installation made up of 19 lamp posts branching out from a central core like a giant seed head.

Visitors to Bruno Munro: Winter Light can enjoy cocktails and appetizers in the arboretum’s two lounges, including cheese plates, hot cocoa and wine from the cash bar. Groups of 20 or more can take part in a private tour on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings for a discounted rate, and the exhibition can be rented out for private parties.

For groups not wanting to brave the cold, there is always the option to explore largest outdoor holiday light display in the Midwest – Holiday Lights in the Park. Held in Phalen Park until Jan. 1, 2017, this exhibit can be enjoyed without ever leaving the warmth and comfort of a vehicle. The 60-plus displays are conveniently laid out throug the park, providing a fun and affordable holiday event with tickets costing $10 per vehicle. The light sculptures and animated installations are on display from 5-10 p.m. nightly and welcome groups in limos, passenger vans, Dart buses and coach buses.
